Avondale street party III
After a fantastic response to my email suggesting visit to the Pub last Thursday to discuss having a street party. Nick,Peter Keith, Paul and I (Richard) selflessly downed pints and mused about planning a street party this summer.
In summary here is what we discussed:
Why have a street party?
There is the Diamond Jubilee (in June) and the Olympics in July but mostly because we like having street parties.
When should we have our street party?
The Jubilee weekend is the of 2nd June – which is the start of the summer half term – quite a few people go away at that time – so it might not be the best date. Also if we do hold it that weekend the Queen will pretty definitely not be able to come – she will be really pissed off.
The Olympics start on the 27th July. At number 68 we are particularly bitter about not getting tickets and are therefore keen to hold a rival event (to show em!). However the weekend before is the start of the School Holidays.
So our suggestion was either the 8th or 15th of July (Sunday) – Nick reminded us that we need the chairs and tables from Chestnuts School and they may well have a school fair on one of those weekends.
We wondered about whether Saturday or Sunday were best?
What next?
Well if we decide to go with those July dates then we don’t have to do much (except meet in the Pub quite often) until May. Here are the basic things we need to do:
- Decide a weekend (Saturday /Sunday)
- Canvas the street (for permission)
- Apply to the council to shut the road
- Sort out Music
- Sort out gazeboes
- Go to the Pub
- Do a leaflet / banner
- Source Chairs and tables etc
- Get Prizes for raffle
- Go to the Pub
One week to go!
It’s all gradually coming together…. Road closure, insurance, road signs, bunting, flyers, games (but no PA/music sorted so far?)
We’ll be holding a raffle to try and recoup the money spent – please try to bring along something on the day to donate as a raffle prize. And we’d love to hear from any musicians/performers who’d like to take part.
We’ve got some flyers for you to print out:
A3 posters for your window
Leaflets
‘Move your car’ reminders
Final meeting on Thursday 23rd @ 8:30 pm at Liza’s house (#81), all welcome.
Street Party 2 – the sequel
The second Avondale Road street party is set for Sunday 26th September, 1pm- 7pm. Some of us met at the Salisbury a couple of weeks ago to look at what needed doing. Most pressing was getting enough signatures agreeing to the road closure (which I think we’ve done now?) so we can get the application off to the council. Other things discussed were: getting/making enough bunting , trestle tables from a local school, street scenery (last year’s palm trees to be stars and planets this year?), seeing if last year’s musicians will make a return appearance… and how to make the party run the full length of the road this time. Ben also made a new flyer which hopefully we’ll put here so you can download and print your own poster.
The next meeting will be on 9th September at 20:30 at the Salisbury. Everyone’s welcome – there’s plenty left to decide and organise. So do come, even if it’s just to find out what’s going on (though we’d love to hear about any ideas for activities).
